I replied to the effect that I readily accepted the apology offered and that I trusted, in presence of what the Viceroy stated, that there would be no further violation of British territory by Chinese Cruisers.
The Viceroy has promised to make fuller enquiries into the affair, the result of which he will hereafter communicate to the Consul.
6. This particular matter has consequently ended satisfactorily, but I deemed it desirable to bring to Your Lordship's notice the circumstances connected with the case which might have resulted in a less amicable solution.
